A headache treatment

The biggest advantage of BOTOX is its convenience. It’s sometimes called a lunchtime procedure, because the injection takes about 10 minutes and you should be able to return to work immediately afterwards.

BOTOX also has a variety of uses besides being a wrinkle treatment. It’s sometimes used to treat chronic migraine, defined by the FDA as 15 or more headache days a month, with each headache lasting four hours or more. In tests it performs over 28 percent better than a placebo, preventing up to nine headache days a month. It is usually taken about once every three months, injected into the muscles of the forehead, scalp, neck and shoulders. The effect of the treatment usually lasts two and a half months. If necessary, other treatments can be used to manage the pain until the next treatment. The FDA has not approved the use of BOTOX to treat headaches that don’t meet the definition of chronic.

More uses for BOTOX

A weaker form of BOTOX is also used to cut back on excessive sweating. This form of BOTOX temporarily blocks the chemical that stimulates the sweat glands. You should see results within a week of taking the drug. The effect lasts at least four to six months, or longer in some cases. It hasn’t been approved by the FDA for use on other areas of the body, but studies suggest it may work there as well.

BOTOX has been used for several years to treat upper limb spasticity, and the FDA recently approved it for lower limb spasticity. It has also been used to treat squints and strabismus (misaligned eyes). It can be used to treat an overactive bladder.

People are still looking for new uses for BOTOX. For example, there have also been attempts to use it as a weight loss product. Many of these attempts have failed, but in a study in Norway, three quarters of a group of obese patients lost an average of 28 percent of their excess weight after three shots of BOTOX to block the vagus nerve (the nerve that sends hunger signals to the brain) over the course of 18 months. More and larger studies will be needed to determine if it is effective and safe. It is also being researched as a treatment for cerebral palsy.
