Family doctors learn a great deal

What family doctors learn

One of the biggest advantages of a family doctor is that he or she treats the whole patient, not just responding to one particular medical condition or one particular organ. Family doctors are ideally suited to practice primary care, and due to the great variety of patients they see, need a greater range of skills than almost any other doctor. Family doctors complete a three-year residency after medical school in which they learn care for infants, the elderly and everyone in between. They learn to look after patients with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and asthma. They learn ear, nose and throat care, emergency medical care, eye, bone, joint, urinary, mental and behavioral care and how to take X-rays and perform minor surgeries. They learn reproductive counseling and family planning.

Once they begin their practice, they learn the really important things — the names and histories of their patients. They know who’s trying to lose weight, who needs to lose weight, who’s trying to quit smoking and who’s at risk of diabetes and heart disease. They know who’s struggling with mental health issues and who has a history of drug and alcohol addiction.

Family doctor services

A family doctor should offer a wide range of services. These should include diagnostic and preventative care. Any family with children is going to need pediatric care, including the ability to treat minor cuts and scrapes. Mental health screenings, gynecological exams, bladder scanning — any one of these things might become something you need. A family doctor may need to limit the number of patients he or she takes on in order to make sure each of them gets the time and attention they need. If you would like to benefit from this level of service, you may want to take advantage of a subscription medical practice.

Caring for people at every stage of life

Four generations, Family doctors

(The following is a dramatization.)

At the age of 92, Mrs. Jackson is that creature not often seen before modern times — a living great-grandmother. She likes to say that if cancer or heart disease were going to take her, they would have done it by now. That said, she has slowed down a good deal, has trouble walking or climbing stairs, and is beginning to worry about cognitive impairment, so she needs regular cognitive tests.

Her son, Arthur, is 65, suffers from high blood pressure and recently went in for an abdominal aortic aneurysm screening. Just as well — the ultrasound procedure caught the potentially fatal condition in an early stage, when it would still respond to medication. Now he’s adjusting reluctantly to a low-sodium diet while having his blood pressure monitored.

Her grandchildren are in their thirties, and are mostly in good health, but one of her granddaughters has diabetes and has to monitor her weight and blood glucose. Another one is pregnant. Her great-grandchildren are ages newborn to 14, and all need varying amounts of pediatric care.

One family doctors look after this entire family. He cares for them in all stages of life — the children with their ear infections and bouts of flu, the older children facing puberty, the new and expectant mothers, middle-aged men and women, and the elderly. There have been times when they needed the care of a specialist in pediatrics or geriatrics, but when half the family is sick with the flu, their family doctors is the one the Jackson family calls on. As the family doctors have watched each patient grow, change and age, he has become intimately familiar with their unique medical situations.

On call doctors there when you need them

It started as a cold…

(Note: The following is a dramatization.)

Mr. Richardson wasn’t a young man, and he’d been through a lot of colds in his life. When he got another one, he wasn’t inclined to worry about it at first. He just cut back on his daily walks and waited for the little nuisance of an illness to clear. He was a widower, and his children didn’t call that often. He had friends, but he didn’t see them every day. There wasn’t really anyone to nag him about his health.

On Friday, he was still running a slight fever, his cough just wouldn’t go away, and he suddenly had trouble focusing his mind on anything and couldn’t remember whether his children had visited this week or not. This was probably why it didn’t occur to him until dinnertime that he really ought to call a doctor. Then he remembered that it was 6 p.m. on a Friday and he wouldn’t even be able to make an appointment until Monday.

Calling the on call doctor

And then he remembered that, on the urging of his children, he had joined a subscription medical plan which included the services of an on call doctor. So he called, his doctor arrived and he got the word.

It was pneumonia. As was often the case in older patients, it took the form of confusion rather than fever, shaking and productive cough. His on call doctor wasn’t sure if it was bacterial pneumonia, but put him on antibiotics. By Monday, he had recovered. Without on call doctor services, his pneumonia would have had two days to get worse before he could even make an appointment to get treated.

Family practice doctors offer all sorts of services

What your family practice doctors does all day

Your family practice doctor should offer many services — treatment for cuts, scrapes and other minor injuries, diagnostic and preventative care, pediatric care for any children you may have, regular and travel vaccinations, mental health screenings, gynecological exams, bladder scanning or removing ingrown toenails. Family practice doctors should have time for their patients and the ability to get to know them all. A family practice doctor must look after people at every stage of their lives — infants, toddlers, older children going through puberty, pregnant women, middle-aged men and women trying to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease or diabetes, or the elderly. More than that, he or she follows the health of patients as they move from one stage to another, and becomes intimately familiar with their medical concerns. In order to be able to handle all this, a family practice doctor generally goes through four years of undergraduate work, four years of medical school and three years of residency. Some choose to do a fellowship in pediatrics, geriatrics or some other specialty field.

Some family practice doctors see about 20 patients a day, while others are even busier. Some start their day as early as 7 a.m., while others prefer the usual 9 a.m. Much of their time is spent following up on patients they diagnosed and prescribed treatments for earlier, ordering prescription refills and checking up on their medical progress. With so many patients, a family practice doctor may need to limit the number of patients he or she takes on, so as to make sure he or she can give each of them the attention they need and deserve. You may want to take advantage of a subscription medical practice in order to benefit from this service personally.

Escape the waiting room with an on call doctor

The usual services of an on call doctor

Most of the medical services you need can be worked into a regular schedule of visits to your family doctor. These services include annual physicals, vaccinations and booster shots, diagnostic tests and specialized physicals for students or athletes. Ear infections and influenza aren’t scheduled in advance, of course, but can usually be dealt with during the regular working day.

Waiting times and how to avoid them

But even under normal circumstances, the fewer days you have to spend waiting for an appointment and the fewer hours you spend in the waiting room, the better. Most of us have heard the horror stories of patients kept waiting for obscenely long times. And some of them really are horror stories. A Brooklyn patient died in a waiting room after waiting there for 24 hours to see an on call doctor. A Canadian patient was kept waiting 34 hours for what was (at least when he walked in the door) a minor injury.

These stories are backed up by statistical evidence. In 2013, the physician staffing firm Merritt Hawkins polled five types of doctor’s offices. They found that patients waited, on average, 29 days to see a dermatologist, 32 days for a heart evaluation and 66 days for a physical. That same year, the Commonwealth Fund found that 26 percent of Americans reported wait times of six days or more for primary care appointments. All this is before you even get into the doctor’s office.

If you or your child is hurt or sick, but not quite badly enough to justify a trip to the emergency room, you don’t want to have to wait any longer than necessary. You especially don’t want to have to make your child wait any longer than necessary. All this can be avoided with the help of an on call doctor 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He or she can respond quickly and professionally to any kind of sudden misfortune. Most importantly, he or she can tell you if you or your child needs to go to the ER right now.

Every family needs a family doctor

The Williams’ terrible, horrible, no good, very bad month

(The following is a dramatization.)

One of the first things the Williams family did when making the move to the Charlotte area was subscribe to a subscription medical plan that included the services of family doctors Which was good, because one of the first things Mr. Williams did on moving day was throw his back out trying to move the piano. Even though it was a Saturday, the doctor came to help him deal with the injury.

This was the beginning of what was going to be a very difficult month for the family. A week later, the family’s oldest daughter was bitten by a dog while jogging. It wasn’t a large dog, but when she got home she found that the wound was too big to cover with a Band-Aid. They called the doctor again, who cleaned up the wound and gave her a couple of stitches and some antibiotics.

On their first day of school, Kevin came into contact with a new friend’s sandwich — which unfortunately was peanut butter and jelly, and Kevin had a dangerous peanut allergy. He was taken to the emergency room, but he needed a couple of follow-up visits from the family doctors afterward. And when Kevin got out of the hospital, the family went out to a restaurant to celebrate. Unfortunately, Mrs. Williams ordered the chicken and got a mild case of food poisoning. The doctor came and diagnosed it as Campylobacter jejuni — not life-threatening, but it made for several unpleasant days… during which time Kevin’s twin brother Keith fell off his bike and dislocated his wrist, and their youngest daughter got an ear infection.

When you have a family, you have a lot of people that a lot can happen to (although usually not all in the same month). That’s why your family need family doctors.

An on call doctor’s work is never done

Being an on call doctor

If you are an on call doctor, your work is never done. You may sometimes have a slow day or two, but y

ou never know when you might be called upon to help someone. It’s like being Superman, only you don’t have to change into a costume and you do have to deal with traffic.

The things you get called on for are problems that are too severe to ignore but might not be bad enough to justify a trip to the emergency room — unless they are that bad, in which case you’re the one who will have to make that determination. If a father has cut himself in the kitchen while chopping cucumbers for a salad, you’ll have to look at the injury and decide if it needs stitches, or just a little more bandaging and topical antibiotic. If someone has had a major allergy attack while visiting a friend’s house, you’ll be the one to decide how serious the situation is. And your nights and weekends are not really open — a child might pull a muscle at the track on Saturday, or someone might get a severe stomachache after dinner.

And then, of course, there are the regular medical services you provide as a family doctor in your normal 9-to-5 schedule. These include annual physicals, vaccinations and booster shots, diagnostic tests and specialized physicals for students or athletes. They also include the patients with ear infections, influenza and other ailments which can wait for a day or so instead of demanding immediate treatment.

So it can be inconvenient to be an on call doctor. On the other hand, subscribing to the services of one can be very convenient indeed.

Family doctors offer a little of everything

A little bit of everything

A pediatrician has to know what injuries and illnesses growing children are vulnerable to. He or she also has to be able to talk to children of any age and get them to cooperate with an examination. An obstetrician has to know all about pregnancy and how to keep pregnant women healthy and ensure a smooth delivery and a healthy baby. A geriatrician has to understand the aging process, recognize the symptoms of Alzheimers or Parkinson’s disease and be able to deal respectfully with the aging and infirm.

A family doctor has to do all of this and more. He or she must care for people in every stage of life —small children, older children going through puberty, pregnant women, middle-aged men and women trying to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease or diabetes, or the elderly. More than that, he or she follows the health of patients as they move from one stage to another, and becomes intimately familiar with their medical concerns.

On call service 24 hours a day

A late night call from an on call doctor

(Note: The following is a dramatization.)

At first, the Smith family was not too worried when their six-year-old daughter got up from the dinner table and said her tummy felt bad. Then she threw up.

Two hours went by, and she was still feeling unwell. She threw up again. She was also beginning to suffer from diarrhea, which in addition to a lot more cleanup and laundry meant that this had to be more than just a case of upset stomach. The Smiths were getting very worried.

For a lot of families, this would have meant lying awake at night while their daughter suffered, then making an appointment with their doctor in the morning and hoping there was an opening that day or the next, taking half a day off from work to sit in a waiting room surrounded by people, each with a different communicable disease… all for what might just turn out to be a case of the stomach flu.

Fortunately, the Smith family subscribed to a medical service that had an on call doctor available for times like these. The same person who had been keeping track of their health for the past few years could come tonight. This was a doctor his daughter already knew as a friend and was willing to trust, and who was willing to come out here at night to look at what might just turn out to be a case of the stomach flu.

It turned out to be a case of the stomach flu — a mild rotavirus infection, to be more precise. After a few days of drinking plenty of fluids and keeping activity to a minimum, the little girl felt much better.

Family doctors do a little of everything

A day or so in the work of a family doctors

Few medical personnel see a greater variety of patients and problems than a family doctor. The family doctor sees an aging man, listens to his descriptions of his occasional memory lapses and tries to decide whether they are normal or a sign of Alzheimers or some other condition.

The family doctor sees a woman in the second trimester of pregnancy, and checks everything to make sure everything is going well. He is not an obstetrician or gynecologist, but he must decide at every appointment whether the patient needs to be referred to one.

The family doctor gives a middle-aged woman a mammogram. As he does so, he listens to her talk about her symptoms. She is showing some of the early signs of type 2 diabetes. He schedules a test for her.

The family doctor sees a teenage track star who pulled a muscle yesterday during practice. He sees a young man with an ingrown toenail that needs trimming. Finally, he sees a family — two parents with three children ranging from two to seven… all with the flu.

Your family doctor should offer a broad range of services. Diagnostic and preventative care are obviously important. Pediatric care and the ability to treat minor cuts and scrapes are essential for any family with children. Mental health screenings, gynecological exams, bladder scanning — any one of these things might become something you need.

On call doctor service seven days a week

One of those times when you need an on call doctor

(Note: The following is a dramatization.)

It was a Saturday afternoon. He was helping his best friend move into a new apartment. After moving several lightweight boxes out of the truck and up the stairs, he had forgotten the cardinal rule of lifting heavy objects — lift with your legs, not your back.

Then he tried lifting the box that turned out to contain a computer and a dozen books.

He very quickly realized that this was a mistake. He set the box down, staggered over to the porch and collapsed into a chair. There he waited for the sudden agony in the small of his back to subside. He hoped it would happen in time for him to get a little more work done today.

But the pain did not go away. Not when the moving job was done. Not when he went home. Not when he had dinner. It was not bad enough to justify a trip to the emergency room, but it was bad enough that he worried that something might really be wrong. At the very least, he did not want to wait until Monday, much less make an appointment for later in the week. Or possibly next week.

Fortunately, he subscribed to a medical service that had an on call doctor available for just such emergencies. The same person who had been keeping track of his health, and the health of his family, for the past few years would be there for him today or tomorrow. This was a doctor he was already familiar and comfortable with, one he knew he could trust.

Regular services and on call services

An on call doctor is someone you might need only once or twice in your life, or possibly never if you are very lucky. But if you need one, no one else will do. Things like annual physicals, vaccinations and booster shots, along with less frequently used services such as diagnostic tests, can be worked into a normal schedule. Even unexpected illnesses, such as the flu, colic or an ear infection, can usually be dealt with during the regular working day.

But then, one night, you cut yourself in the kitchen and the bandages in your medicine cabinet are not quite enough. Or someone gets a headache or stomachache that lasts too long and hurts more than it should. Or you hurt your back while moving furniture on Saturday. When these things happen, you do not want to wait until tomorrow or Monday to deal with them — especially if the person suffering is a small child. At times like this, you need an on call doctor who can help you on any day of the week, at any time you need. Most importantly, he or she can tell you if you or your child needs to go to the emergency room right now.

And imagine how comforting it would be if the person coming to your help at this awkward hour were the same person who keeps track of the course of your health, and that of your family, from year to year. The same person who lets you know if you are at risk of diabetes or heart disease, or if your child is showing signs of some developing health problem. There is no greater reassurance in a moment of crisis than the familiar and friendly place of someone who has already earned your trust

Family doctors are with you at every stage of life

Picking the right family doctor

This is how important family doctors are. Merritt Hawkins, a national health care search firm, found that family physicians are the most highly recruited doctors in U.S. health care for the ninth year in a row. The family doctor cares for people in all stages of life — small children in need of pediatric care, older children in the midst of puberty, expectant mothers hoping for the safest delivery and the healthiest possible baby, middle-aged men and women at risk of diabetes or heart disease, and the elderly with their own set of health concerns. There are times when you will want the care of a specialist in pediatrics or geriatrics, but when the whole family is sick with the flu, the family doctor is the one you call on. As the doctor watches patients grow, change and age, he or she becomes intimately familiar with their unique medical situations.

Family doctors should have time for their patients. A general practitioner who sees as many patients as possible has only a little time and attention to spare for any of them. A family doctor may need to limit the number of patients he or she takes on in order to make sure he or she can keep track of their health properly.

Your family doctor should offer a broad range of services. Diagnostic and preventative care are obviously important. Pediatric care and the ability to treat minor cuts and scrapes are a must for any family with children. An in-house pharmacy and lab services are great time savers. If you and your family plan on vacationing abroad, you will want someone who can provide the right travel vaccinations. If one of your children is a teenager with a particularly persistent case of acne, you may want a doctor who can prescribe Accutane. Mental health screenings, gynecological exams, bladder scanning — any one of these things might become necessary. Even the ability to remove ingrown toenails may come in handy.

The importance of a doctor on call for your family

Regular services of family doctor

You do not often need an on call doctor — but when you need one, you really need one.

Most of the medical services you take advantage of can be worked into a regular schedule of visits to your family doctor. These include annual physicals, vaccinations and booster shots, diagnostic tests and specialized physicals for students or athletes. Ear infections and influenza are not scheduled in advance, of course, but can usually be dealt with during the regular working day.

Your doctor on call helps you keep track of the course of your health, and that of your family, from year to year. He or she warns you if you are at risk of diabetes or heart disease, or any other long-term health problem, and gives you advice on how to avoid the danger. With the aid of regular check-ups, he or she lets you know about any developing health problems your child may suffer from. If necessary, he or she can refer you to a specialist. All of these things can be taken care of without going outside the normal office hours of your family doctor.

Emergency services of family doctor

But every once in a while, something happens at the wrong time. The pulled muscle on a weekend game. The upset stomach that seems to be more painful than it ought to be. The cut that seems a little too deep for a bandage, but not deep enough for a trip to the emergency room. These are things you want to deal with now, not tomorrow or Monday. And when your child is suffering, the last thing you want to have to tell him or her is that it will have to wait till morning.

A doctor on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week can help you with all these things. He or she can respond quickly and professionally to all sorts of sudden misfortune. Most importantly, he or she can tell you if you or your child needs to go to the emergency room right now.

Family Doctors Deliver More Wholesome Care

Family doctors are individuals who specialize in providing care and treatment to a wider variety of patients than a generic doctor in the average practice. A family doctor provides for the entire family from babies to grandparents.

Family practice doctors

Physicians often choose to specialize in a particular field of medicine or perhaps a certain age range.  One example is pediatricians- doctors who are trained to diagnose and treat various childhood illnesses and monitor adolescent development. For the family, such expertise can prove vital for the children of the household, along with the elderly members.  Seeing family doctors allows one to get a broader range of care. These professional physicians are eager to treat anyone including your children, elderly parents or grandparents, and of course, you. It’s a good base from which you can receive a diagnoses and plan treatment procedures. Such a broad range of patients ensure that family doctors are on top of their game and have plenty of experience dealing with a variety of health issues.

Keeping the same doctor for everyone in the family

In addition to the various services our family practice doctors have to offer, family doctors offer convenience and dedication. Some families see different physicians. That’s potentially a lot different appointments in varying locations that can become very difficult to track and maintain. This can cause frustration, and it makes some individuals give second thoughts to addressing their health needs. Being a member of a family doctor practice ensures that your entire family can be taken care of at one location and by a consistent staff of professionals.

We understand that you are not only placing your health in our care but the people you care about. This is a powerful motivation for us to do our jobs, but more, it can give us insight in what to look for when examining our patients. Naturally family doctors get to know the various family members they treat, which could prove vital in detecting patterns of injury or illness.

Conner Clinic Can Save You Money! Here’s how…

Getting sick is really tough when you do not have an insurance policy. You will need to worry about not just the hospital bill and doctors’ fees, but also about the medication you need to take–which can get really expensive.

No insurance? Conner Clinic can help save you money!

Recently, a patient with no insurance needed medicine to control blood pressure. After seeing Dr. Will Conner at Conner Clinic and receiving prescription, the patient took the prescription to Wal-mart. Upon presenting the prescription, Wal-mart informed the patient that the medicine he needed is not in their $4.00 formulary; hence it will cost him $100 for 30 pills.

Shocked by the huge amount, the patient’s wife called Conner Clinic for advice. Dr. Conner contacted his pharmaceutical supplier and ordered medicine for less than $100–that’s 90 pills good for three months sold to the patient for just $30. Wal-mart would have charged the patient $300 for the same amount of supply.

At Conner Clinic, we do not just provide the best care for our patients. We also offer as much help as we can…even when it comes to finding cheaper medicines.
