It started as a cold…

(Note: The following is a dramatization.)

Mr. Richardson wasn’t a young man, and he’d been through a lot of colds in his life. When he got another one, he wasn’t inclined to worry about it at first. He just cut back on his daily walks and waited for the little nuisance of an illness to clear. He was a widower, and his children didn’t call that often. He had friends, but he didn’t see them every day. There wasn’t really anyone to nag him about his health.

On Friday, he was still running a slight fever, his cough just wouldn’t go away, and he suddenly had trouble focusing his mind on anything and couldn’t remember whether his children had visited this week or not. This was probably why it didn’t occur to him until dinnertime that he really ought to call a doctor. Then he remembered that it was 6 p.m. on a Friday and he wouldn’t even be able to make an appointment until Monday.

Calling the on call doctor

And then he remembered that, on the urging of his children, he had joined a subscription medical plan which included the services of an on call doctor. So he called, his doctor arrived and he got the word.

It was pneumonia. As was often the case in older patients, it took the form of confusion rather than fever, shaking and productive cough. His on call doctor wasn’t sure if it was bacterial pneumonia, but put him on antibiotics. By Monday, he had recovered. Without on call doctor services, his pneumonia would have had two days to get worse before he could even make an appointment to get treated.
